Denim Care Guide

Denim Care Guide

Sep 19, 2024

Because it is a cotton garment, many people believe that denim does not call for special care. That is quite wrong. Even in 100% cotton, denim has certain features that make it important to apply special washing, drying, and maintenance processes. Here are some care tips from PTCL that will be necessary for keeping your jeans at their best for longer.

Golden Rules for Denim Care

1. Few Washes

Limit the washing of your jeans to every 10 wears to protect their color and fit. If your jeans are not visibly dirty or stained, do not wash them. Hang them on a clothes rail for a great freshening up without resorting to the washing machine.

2. Gentle Washing

When it's time to clean your jeans, choose a low spin speed and temperature washing machine cycle. This will help preserve the fabric and ensure that the fit lasts longer and doesn't fade out.

3. Air dry

Keep your jeans away from direct heat sources that can shrink or damage denim, which include tumble dryers. Allow your jeans to air dry either in your home or outside in a shaded area. Air drying is easier on your jeans and good for the environment.

Rules for Denim Care

Washing New Jeans

It is not advisable to have new jeans in a washing machine with other items for the first couple of washes. Of course, your jeans-maybe those from PTCL's Perfect Jeans-are pre-washed, still, there is a possibility of dye transferring onto other clothes. Colors may bleed, so always separate and wash your new jeans.

How to Wash Jeans Properly

1. Use a Low Wash Temperature: To avoid fading and shrinking, wash your jeans in cold water (up to 30°C) or on a cold wash cycle. This is gentler on your jeans and better for the environment. Check the care label if you’re unsure.

2. Pre-Treat Stains: A good treatment with a stain remover or curd soap will ensure they are removed before actually washing the fabric.

3. Wash the Jeans Inside Out: It preserves the color of your jeans and minimizes friction against fabric. Remember to empty all pockets before washing.

4. Close Zippers: Zip up any zippers to prevent them from catching or damaging the fabric during the wash cycle.

5. Use a Laundry Bag: Putting your jeans in a laundry bag will protect the fabric and make it go through a more gentle wash.

Washing Instructions

Hand Washing vs. Machine Washing

Hand washing will be easier on denim and can extend the lives of your jeans, but it takes longer. Machine wash in a delicate cycle with less spin when that's not an option, to reduce abrasion.

How Often Should You Be Washing Jeans?

How Often Should You Be Washing Jeans?

Contrary to popular belief, not everything needs washing after every wear. It is damaging to the fibers and to the colors, too. Jeans are good to be washed only after every 10 wears. If they aren't dirty or stained, just air them out.

Drying Your Jeans the Right Way

Do not tumble dry. Air-drying will prevent shrinkage and damages to the fabrics. Gently squeeze out excess water without wringing, then hang or lay them out flat until they're dry. Wrings wet denim to avoid distortion.

Removing Grease Stains

1. Blot the Stain: First of all, absorb the excess oil or grease using a clean, white cloth or paper towel.

2. Apply Washing-Up Liquid: Apply a small amount of washing-up liquid directly onto the stain, as this is a kind of detergent that's effective against grease.

3. Rub Gently: Using your fingers or a soft brush, work the washing-up liquid into the stain.

4. Allow to Sit: Let the solution sit on the fabric for some minutes.

5. Wash as Usual: Preserve color by washing the jeans in cold water inside-out with mild detergent.

6. Check Before Drying: Check that the stain is gone before one proceeds with drying. Do this repeatedly, if necessary.

Wear and Tear Prevention

To avoid jeans from stretching out, never pull or stretch them when they are wet. Store your jeans by hanging them up or neatly folding them in order to maintain shape and avoid creases.
